Cranberry supervisors approve grant applications for park systems

CRANBERRY TWP — Supervisors at an agenda preparation meeting on Thursday, May 29, approved two grant applications for improvements to two of the township’s most popular outdoor recreation spots.

The first of those was a $1 million grant application to the state Department of Community and Economic Development to expand public access within Graham Park.

The township recently acquired an adjacent property spanning more than 40 acres that sits between the residential developments of Hunter’s Creek and Park Place. While walking trails already exist in the park, officials plan to develop a connected environmental trail system throughout the new land.

“It really is an environmentally unique kind of area,” township manager Dan Santoro said. “It can get access down to the stream. So we’re really thinking about an environmental trail that will have stops along the way. It’s really opening up that area for education, but also giving people another opportunity to walk in a different location.”

Officials also will seek more than $150,000 from a People, Parks and Community Foundation grant for new swing sets near the concession stand at Community Park North. The foundation is a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society, which advocates for various parks and recreation initiatives throughout the commonwealth.

The project is part of recommendations that were made in Cranberry’s Parks and Recreation Comprehensive Plan.

There is no timeline as of now for when officials would find out if the grant applications are successful.

In other business, supervisors authorized bids for storm sewer upgrades to Wyndmere Drive, Wayne Drive and Northfield Road. Those bids will be presented to supervisors at next week’s regular meeting on June 5.
