Evans City approves monarch butterfly proclamation

Evans City borough will continue to be a safe haven for monarch butterflies and their habitats.

On Monday, May 6, council members voted unanimously to accept a Monarch Butterfly Proclamation for the third straight year. Partnering with the National Wildlife Federation, the borough will have several projects around the community to promote an increase in the number of these pollinators and their habitats from May to September.

Council president Cheri Deener-Kohan said the borough’s monarch butterfly project also will boost beautification around the community and help educate residents about the importance of protecting the environment.

“It’s really important to do what we can to help the environment,” Deener-Kohan said. “And it’s simple things we can do to help.”

The borough will look to expand on several pollinator green areas around the borough as well as develop new areas in which to plant monarch-friendly plants.

“We’re going to be maintaining mostly,” Deener-Kohan said. “And we’re going to try to integrate monarch butterfly conservation into the Edco Park master plan.”

The borough also will rely on residents to help identify areas around Evans City that can be used as new pollinating green spaces.

Residents who want to get involved can visit the Evans City website for more details.
