Slobodnyak named Westminster coach

NEWE WILMINGTON — Former Mars and North Catholic swimming coach Todd Slobodnyak has been named head coach of the Westminster College men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs.

He returns to his alma mater after spending the last eight years as head swimming coach at Cranberry Township’s Rose E. Schneider Family YMCA.

SRU athletes get PSAC recognition

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University softball standout Alexsa Hurd has been named PSAC West Athlete of the Week.

Hurd put together a .517 batting average (15 for 29) with five home runs and 13 RBI in nine games. The Rock went 6-3 in those nine games.

Rock senior attack player Lauren Searles was named PSAC Women’s Lacrosse Athlete of the Week. She scored 10 goals and had two assists in a pair of games.

Junior sprinter AJ Virata was named PSAC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week. He won the 200 meters at the John Papa Invitational in 21.13 seconds, top time in the conference so far this season. He ran a leg of the winning 4x100 relay as well.

Graduate student Tiffany Jolayemi was the PSAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week. She won the hammer throw at the John Papa Invitational with a throw of 54.17 meters, best in the PSAC this season.

KC grad Kamenski earns PAC award

TRAFFORD — Karns City graduate and Westminster College senior Anthony Kamenski has been named Presidents’ Athletic Conference Track Athlete of The Week.

Kamenski won the 400-meter hurdles at Slippery Rock University’s John Papa Invitational, posting the PAC’s second fastest time of the season at 54.77 seconds. He also placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles.

Moniteau grad Zendron honored by PAC

TRAFFORD — Moniteau graduate and Westminster College freshman Jenna Zendron has been named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Track and Field Newcomer of the Week.

Zendron placed eighth in the 400 meters with a personal-best time of 1 minute, 00.53 seconds at the John Papa Invitational. It is the PAC’s second-best time this season.

Vittone gets 3 hits in GCC baseball win

GROE CITY — Seven Fields resident Luke Vittone collected a double, two singles and three runs scored in Grove City College’s 9-2 baseball win over Waynesburg in the first game of a doubleheader last Tuesday.

Vittone added a run-scoring single in the Wolverines’ 9-8 loss in the nightcap.

SRU baseball ends 6-game win streak

FROSTBURG, Md. — The Slippery Rock University baseball team had its six-game win streak snapped with an 11-2 loss at Frostburg State on Tuesday.

SRU fell to 24-12 with the loss. Koby ubash had a two-run single for The Rock’s only runs.
