Three children and two adults required transport to a local hospital in early July after their vehicle was struck while changing a tire on the side of Interstate 79, state police said Monday, Aug. 10.

The crash occurred the night of July 3 on I-79 north in Lancaster Township. The children aged 12, 8 and 6 were transported to UPMC Passavant Hospital. All except the 8-year-old sustained injuries, according to police. The adults in the vehicle, Khalee A. Cephas, 27, and Bree A. Howard, 34, both of Pittsburgh, were also transported with suspected minor injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle, Thomas W. Theisen, 45, of Groton, also sustained suspected minor injuries, but was not transported.

Police said while the family pulled over in their Mitsubishi Outlander to change a tire, Theisen’s Chrysler Pacifica crossed the fog line and struck the Outlander.

Both vehicles were unable to be driven.
