Ohio man accused of profiting from quick-change scheme in Cranberry Township

An Ohio man is accused of conducting a quick-change scam that left a Giant Eagle in Cranberry Township missing $500.

JaShawn Lamar Clayborne, 33, of Lagrange, Ohio, was charged Thursday, Oct. 1, by Cranberry Township police with one misdemeanor count each of theft and receiving stolen property following an Aug. 18 incident.

A Giant Eagle loss prevention officer provided police with video of the transaction that showed a man, later identified as Clayborne, pay for a bag of Cheetos with $100, according to charging documents. The cashier then gave Clayborne change.

Police said Clayborne then exchanged money with the cashier 13 times over less than three and a half minutes. Police said this is a common tactic used to fluster and confuse the cashier into providing more change than is required.

At the end of the night, the drawer was short $500, police said.

Clayborne’s preliminary hearing has not been scheduled.
