Butler County applies for $930,012 in CDBG funds for five townships
Butler County is applying for $930,012 in 2026 Community Development Block Grants for the third phase of the Marion Township sewer project and housing rehabilitation and road improvement projects in five communities.
County commissioners on Wednesday, Sept. 23, approved the application to the state Department of Community and Economic Development for all of the projects.
The county is using its $393,160 CDBG allocation for the Marion Township sewer project. The allocation includes $70,533 for administrative costs.
Jackson Township will receive $103,067 for housing rehabilitation, demolition and administrative costs.
Jefferson Township will receive $106,642 for housing rehabilitation and administrative costs.
Penn Township will receive $104,230 for housing rehabilitation and administrative costs.
Slippery Rock Township will receive $123,965 for road improvements and administrative costs.
Summit Township will use $98,948 for owner-occupied housing rehabilitation and administrative costs.
In addition, commissioners awarded a $40,000 contract to Hiles Excavating of Chicora to demolish a home in Penn Township. Hiles submitted the lowest of three bids for the demolition.
Commissioners also approved an agreement with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency to provide the county with a $105,000 hazard mitigation grant. The money comes from PEMA and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Emergency Services Director Steve Bicehouse said the program requires municipalities to participate in the hazard mitigation plan, which must be submitted to PEMA in October.
He said municipalities must complete a survey and list projects they want to undertake. Municipalities have used the money to buy properties in flood plains to prevent repetitive losses from flooding, and the money can be used to reduce culvert and road flooding, Bicehouse said.
