2 U.S. Senate candidates removed from primary ballot

Two U.S. Senate candidates from Allegheny County have been removed from the April 23 primary ballot after objections to their nominating petitions were granted in court, but their names will appear on the ballot.

William Parker, a Democrat, and Joseph Vodvarka, a Republican, were removed from the ballot by a Commonwealth Court order that was affirmed by the state Supreme Court in March.

Parker was challenging incumbent Democrat Robert P. Casey Jr. of Lackawanna County and Vodvarka was challenging Republican candidate Dave McCormick of Allegheny County.

Commonwealth Court granted a motion to set aside Parker’s petition on March 4 and a motion to set aside Vodvarka’s petition on March 8. They filed appeals with the state Supreme Court, which affirmed the rulings March 18 and March 22, respectively.

However, the Butler County Election Bureau finalized its ballot March 15 before the litigation was resolved. The result is that both names will appear on the ballot even though they have been removed.

If voters mark their ballots for Parker or Vodvarka, their votes will not be counted, according to the bureau.

Voters wishing to vote for either candidate will have to fill in the oval that will appear next to “or write-in” and write in their names on the line on the ballot.
