A gallery exhibit showcasing the pinhole photography of Michael Dittman will be available for public viewing in April and May in the second-floor gallery at the Butler Area Public Library, 218 N. McKean St., Butler.

Pinhole photography is an early technique carried out by Dittman, who used a basic homemade camera comprised of a lightproof box, an aperture made of a thin brass sheet, and film.

No digital enhancement was used in any of the photos, Dittman said.

“There is a magical aspect to pinhole photography. Due to the lack of a viewfinder and the vagaries of light, there is an element of the unknown until the film is developed,” he said. “The technique requires thought and preparation, and the long exposure time leads to a meditative process.”

Dittman, of Butler, is a writer and photographer whose work has been seen in various publications.

The gallery will be open during regular library hours.
