Man accused of attempted robbery in Cranberry, mother charged

A West View man accused of attempting to rob a woman of her purse tried to hide from police in a nearby hotel with the help of his mother, according to Cranberry Township police.

Jessie J. Mrofchak, 21, was charged with felony robbery and misdemeanors drug possession and false identification to police on Thursday, while his mother Michelle A. Isaac, 46, of Pittsburgh, was charged with felony hindering apprehension.

Police said they were dispatched at 9:35 p.m. for a report of a robbery near the Hampton Inn. The woman calling said a man in a black hoodie tried to steal her purse and dragged her across the ground before fleeing behind a business, documents showed.

A witness told police he heard the woman scream and saw a man clad in black flee the scene. Documents showed the man was seen speaking on the phone outside the Hampton Inn before a female employee exited the hotel to meet him. The two then went back inside.

Police said they found a pair of muddy shoes and black gloves inside a vacant room in the hotel, and later discovered a room that was supposed to be vacant had occupants moving about inside.

Upon gaining access to the room, police said Isaac and her son, later identified as Mrofchak, were inside.

Police said Mrofchak matched the description of the suspect provided by the victim and witness. During a search, Mrofchak was found in possession of a small amount of marijuana.

Mrofchak gave police a false name numerous times before he was identified, documents showed.

He was placed in Butler County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail and his preliminary hearing before District Judge Kevin Flaherty is scheduled April 12.

Isaac’s preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
