Rock basketball sweeps Clarion

CLARION —Butler graduate Jordan Kauffman sank three treys Saturday at Clarion — including one in the opening minutes that gave her team the lead it never lost — as the Slippery Rock University women’s basketball team claimed a 77-68 victory.

The Rock was 3-0 for the week, improving to 12-8 overall and 7-7 in PSAC West play. Clarion slipped to 3-15 overall, 3-12 in league action.

SRU scored a season-best 45 points in the first half and led by 13 at the break. Deleah Gibson scored 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds, had six assists and three steals for SRU. Isabellah Middeton chipped in 16 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. Alyssa Gillin came off the bench to tally 11 points and four rebounds.

Kauffman had nine points.

Sierra Bermudez led Clarion with 18 points and three assists.

SRU (men) 86, Clarion 66 — The Rock (13-7, 7-7) snapped a three-game losing streak while Clarion slipped to 2-18 overall, 2-14 in conference play.

Jomo Goings paced five Rock players in double figures, scoring a career-high 19 points. He grabbed five rebounds as well.

Khalid Gates and Lashon Lindsey both had double-doubles. Gates tallied 15 points and 10 rebounds, Lindsey 12 points and 10 boards. Amante Britt scored 16 points to pull within 35 of becoming the 24th Rock men’s basketball player to score 1,000 career points.

Bobby Clifford contributed 13 points, five rebounds and three assists to the win.

Gerald Jarmon scored a game-high 24 points for the Golden Eagles.

Both Rock teams travel to Gannon for games on Wednesday. The women’s game is at 5:30 p.m., the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.
