Christy lifts Planets

Sophomore nets 18 points vs. New Castle

Cecilia Christy paced four Mars in double figures, scoring 18 points in the Planets’ 62-46 girls basketball win over New Castle on Monday night.

Carmella McDole scored 13 points for Mars (7-6, 3-2) while Mya Moore and Gianna DeLisio scored 10 points each. The Planets pulled away by outscoring the Red Hurricane (2-13, 0-6) 22-12 in the third quarter.

Mars plays Lincoln Park at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Moon, varsity only.

Pine-Richland 50, Butler 33 — Sydney Patterson scored 12 points for the Golden Tornado (3-11, 1-4), who lost for the ninth time in 10 games. Makenna Maier added nine ;points and Amelia McMichael seven.

Madison Zavasky scored 19 points and Cate Gentile18 for the Rams (3-10, 2-3). Butler travels to Plum on Friday.

Friday: Butler at Plum

Greensburg Salem 53, Freeport 31 — The Yellowjackets (6-9, 2-4) were outscored 23-8 in the first quarter and could not get back in the game. Jaden Gaillot scored eight points, Giacinta Pugliese seven for Freeport.

Kaitlyn Mankins netted 16 points and Gia Rosensteel 13 for the Golden Lions (12-3, 4-2).

Boys Basketball

Imani Christian 88, Summit Academy 40 — The Knights fell behind by 24 as eight minutes passed in this Friday night WPIAL Section 3-1A road test. Austin Hindman paced Summit Academy (3-5, 1-2) with 10 points.

Mars 57, Erie 50 — Ryan Ceh scored 18 points and Austin Campbell added 13 as the Planets (9-5) won for the seventh time in eight games in this Ron Galbreath Classic game.

Remi Black added 12 points and Austen Wroblewski eight for Mars, which hosts Moon on Tuesday.

Wrestling

Butler sophomore Santino Slobodas won at the 114-pound weight class Saturday at the the Mid Winter Mayhem hosted by the Kovalick Center on the campus of Indiana (Pa.) University. There were 58 teams competing.

Sloboda (20-0) went 5-0 for the day as the No. 2 seed st 114. He defeated top-seed Brock Ruthermel of Line Mountain, 2-1, in the finals, scoring a reversal in the third period for the win.

Golden Tornado junior Kase Chopp took second at 139 pounds despite entering the competition as the No. 7 seed. He upset No. 2 seed and returning state champion Dalton Perry of Canon-McMillan in the quarterfinals. Chopp (21-3) trailed 7-1 in the match, scored a takedown, receivied a stalling point, then got a reversal and back points in the final seconds for an 8-7 decision. Chopp lost by technical fall to Leon Bassett of Bishop McCort in the finals.

Butler placed 15th in the tournament as a team,. Nick Savannah went 2-2 at 107 pounds, Leo Iarrapino 3-2 at 133, Dawson Davis 2-2 at 160, Luke Zanaglio 2-2 at 215 and Diamond Cantera 3-2 at heavyweight.

Knoch at Valley Duals — Knoch earned first-place at the Valley Duals Tournament Saturday, winning matches against South Park (65-12) and Valley (47-27).

Miranda LeJevic, Wyatt Foster, Owen Layhew, Parker Anderson, Derrick Glover, and Lucas Rouleau picked up wins in both matches.

Braylee Ireland, Jordan Auther, Jarrett Crowe, Brayden McGowan, Brady Pflugh, and Paul Kuczynski also had wins.

Indoor Track and Field

Butler’s boys 4x200 meter relay team took first at the Youngstown State meet over the weekend. There were 118 schools represented from states. Chris Rubcic, Landon Lacey, Aaron Stebick and David Graef ran the event in 1 minute, 31.94 seconds — the fourth fastest time in Pa. so far.

The same Golden Tornado foursome won the 4x400 in 3:32.91, also the fourth fastest time in the state.

Butler’s “B” 4x200 of Regan Peth, Kevin Shriver, Orein McBride-Cager and Jacob Fallecker finished fifth in 1:38.04. The Tornado’s “B” 4x400 of Peth, Fallecker, Shriver and Griffin Bauer took second in 3:38.04. Butler high jumper Orein McBride-Cager took second in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 2 inches, trailing only Union’s Hayden Smith (6-6).

Butler returns to YSU next weekend.

Slippery Rock was also at the YSU meet. Tyler Arblaster took second in the 400 meters in 52.53 seconds, Levi Prementine second in the long jump at 20 feet, 6.5 inches. The Rockets’ 4x200 relay of Eli Anderson, Trent Davey, Prementine and Arblaster, girls triple jumper Samantha Montgomery and girls 60-meter hurdler Alexandra Popovec took third.

Anderson was fourth in the 60-meter hurdles, Aiva Reich sixth in the girls 60-meter hurdles, girls triple jumper Morgan Huntington eighth.
