Planets move on in soccer playoffs

Addison Girdwood scored twice and contributed a pair of assists as Mars’ girls soccer team topped District 10 champion Warren, 4-0, in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs Tuesday night.

Ainsley Ray and Rosie Pellegrino also scored for the Planets (18-1). Brynn Ramsey chipped in with two assists while goalies Kate McEnroe and Lily Goodworth combined for the shutout in net.

Girls Volleyball

In PIAA Class 2A first-round action, Freeport swept District 10 champion North East by scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 25-23.

Alaina Whitlinger had 11 kills and six blocks, Josie Russo 10 kills and four blocks in the victory.

Sydney Selker tallied 15 service points and nine kills while teammate Autumn English chipped in with five kills and four blocks.

The Yellowjackets (21-2) will face Philipsburg-Osceola (23-0) in a quarterfinal Saturday at a time and site to be determined.

North Catholic 3, Warren 1 — The Trojanettes (19-2) advanced to Saturday’s Class 3A quarterfinals against Thomas Jefferson (18-2) with this win over the District 10 champion Dragons.

The Trojanettes prevailed by scores of 25-23, 21-25, 25-15 and 25-16.
