The tube has been removed from Mason Martin’s chest and his lung has completely recovered after being injured at a football game Friday night, Sept. 1 at Karns City Area School District’s football field.

The medical update was included in a Facebook post from Mason’s mother, Stacy King Martin, on Monday, Sept. 4. She said the high school senior and Karns City quarterback has demonstrated some purposeful movement in his arms, and is also retracting his legs when his toes are pinched.

“This is the first step in an extremely long journey,” she said in the post.

Martin said the prayer vigil held Sunday evening at Karns City football field in support of Mason has motivated the family and overwhelmed them with joy.

Mason, the team’s senior quarterback, collapsed before a play in the third quarter of a home game against Redbank Valley. He was taken from the field by ambulance and then transported by helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. The incident was reported to dispatch at 8:48 p.m.

Joe Sherwin, head coach for Karns City’s football team, said some alumni football players and local clergy quickly came together to organize the prayer vigil Sunday. Word of Mason’s injury and the vigil spread over the weekend, and many businesses’ signs in and around the school district showed messages of support for Mason.
