A Union High School student narrowly won a state golf championship at Krendale Golf Course by shooting two eagles — one on the 18th hole — earning the Butler Elks its first state championship at the tournament.

Ron Milanovich, who was a rising senior at Union High School in Clarion County, scored 68 on day one at the Krendale course, edging out second-place contender Bill Shoop, of Lebanon, who shot 70 on the par 72 course.

Milanovich completed the tournament with a score of 137. He earned his spot at the tournament by shooting a leading score at Krendale approximately a month earlier, becoming the Butler Elks’ lead qualifier.

The top placers of the tournament were awarded by state Sen. Donald O. Oesterling, who also was vice president of the Pennsylvania Elks organization.
