Butler Eagle lead photographer Shane Potter took home a first-place award in the category of Excellence in Journalistic Craft Achievement, Spot News Photo at the 59th annual Golden Quill Awards on Tuesday night at the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh.

Potter won the award for his photograph titled “Firefighter Pauses to Catch His Breath,” which was taken during a house fire in Butler on Dec. 20, 2022.

“I feel the photo shows the emotional toll that firefighters go through,” Potter said.

The Quills, which are sponsored by the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania aim to recognize excellence in print, broadcast, photography, design illustration and online journalism in Western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and northern West Virginia.

Winners were chosen from among more than 1,000 entries, which were judged by the Los Angeles Press Club.
