Sophomore left-hander tosses 3-hit shutout in 7-0 win

Aedan Fowler made his debut a dynamic one.

Seneca Valley’s sophomore left-hander made his first career varsity start on the mound Thursday night at Michelle Krill Field at Historic Pullman Park and shut out Butler, 7-0. He tossed a three-hitter.

Fowler threw 99 pitches and worked 6.2 inmnings. He was pulled with two ours and nobody on in the finasl inning. Paul Rebovich came on to get the final out in relief.

“We could have let (Fowler) go, but I’ve got other pitchers who need work,” Raider coach Eric Semega said. “If it was a no-hitter, that’s a different story.

“But we’re very pleased with the way Aedan pitched tonight. He earned this (starting) opportunity and took full advantage of it.”

The victory pulls SV into a tie with Butler in Section 1-A at 6-4. Semega does not consider this three-game series — which continues Friday and Saturday at Seneca Valley — as critical.

“There’s no way we can win the section,” the coach said. “Eight teams make the playoffs and everybody has a standout pitcher. You’re going to get somebody’s best right off ... we have to show up and play.”

Fowler showed up and dealt on this night. He threw 45 of 67 pitches for strikes in the first five innings before running into control issues in the sixth. With two outs, he walked Conner McTighe, hit Liam McElroy with a pitch and walked Mac Schnur to load the bases.

But he got Noah Collins to line out to right field to preserve the shutout. The Golden Tornado did not get any other runner as far as second base in the entire game.

“I’ve been working on my cutter, trying to combine it with my slider and sinker,” Fowler said. “I’ve been struggling to do that, but throwing bullpen before the game, I saw it was workling, so I went with it.”

Hunter Troiano doubled to right and scored on a single by Creed Erdos to give SV a 1-0 lead in the first. Owen Yarussi added a run-scoring single in the fifth for a 2-0 advantage. The Raiders failed to score after loading the bases with no outs in the fourth and after putting runners on the corners with no outs following Yarussi’s single in the fifth.

Mac Schnur took the loss for Butler, getting pulled because of pitch count with two outs in the sixth.

“Mac kept us in this game and gave us a chance to win,” Butler coach Josh Forbes said. “He showed great composure pitching out of jams and our defense was outstanding behind him, turning three double plays.

“They had a left-hander with a change-up and he kept our right-handed hitters off-balance all night. The disappointing thing for us is that we didn’t hit, but you have to tip your cap to their kid. He didn’t strike out many, but he did a great job.”

Fowler fanned only three hitters, but had command of the strike zone. Mavrik Clement had two singles, Madden Clement one for the Tornado,.

“I don’t have the kind of stuff that’s gonna strike people out,” Fowler said. “I trust the defense behind me.”

Erdos drilled a two-out, two-run double for the Raiders during a three-run sixth inning. SV added two more runs in the seventh in pulling away late. Nick Parrotto had a double and two singles to highlight a 12-hit attack.

Every Raider in the starting lineup reached base.

“Whether they resulted in hits or not, I loved our approach at the plate tonight,” Semega said.“
