FREEPORT — The weather was raw. The performances were anything but.

The third annual Butler County Track and Field Classic took place Thursday at Freeport Area High School and featured a number of meet records, double winners and one triple winner.

Team scores are not kept in this meet, designed to bring all nine county high school track and field teams together. It was postponed from Saturday, causing Karns City, Moniteau, Knoch and Mars to drop out. Grove City opted in.

“We’re excited to have this here,” Freeport coach John Gaillot said of the County Classic. “It’s been a long time since we’ve hosted a meet of this magnitude.

“It’s an opportunity to compete early in the season against top-level talent and gauge where you’re at. I love this meet. We’ll never miss one.”

Slippery Rock junior Levi Prementine didn’t miss much of anything Thursday. He won both boys hurdle events, the high jump and placed second in the long jump. His time of 14.97 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles set a meet record.

“The competition is everything,” Prementine said. “I set a personal record (39.99 seconds) in the 300 hurdles, too. This doesn’t happen in a regular dual meet.”

Prementine finished just ahead of Rocket teammate Eli Anderson in the 300 hurdles.

“We’re a small school, but we work hard,” he said.

North Catholic’s Grace Lazzara won the 800 and 1,600 meters on the girls side, setting meet records in both. Her North Catholic teammate, Julia Zalenski, won the 3,200 and set a meet record in that event.

“I love this meet,” Lazzara said. “It’s fun and it’s competitive. We (North Catholic) moved up to Triple-A this year, so we need to get used to running against bigger schools and this will help in that regard.

“I got to meet a bunch of new people today. I’ve become friends with some of the Butler girls, who I may never have met if not for an event like this.”

Other double winners in the girls meet were Seneca Valley’s Clarie Riehl in the 200 and 400 meters, Grove City’s Abby Nichols in the hurdle events, Butler’s Megan Baggetta in the long jump and triple jump, Freeport’s Reese Skiba in the shot put and discus.

Riehl missed last year’s Classic — hosted by Seneca Valley — due to injury.

“It’s a good start to the season,” Riehl said. “I like seeing other places, too. We didn’t have too many away meets last season.”

Skiba shattered the meet record in the discus. Her toss of 119 feet, 10 inches, was 13 feet farther than the previous mark.

“We have good athletes in our program,” Skiba said. “We’re a small school ... small, but mighty. It was neat to have a big event like this at our school, too. We get to compete against neighboring schools we wouldn’t see otherwise.”

Baggetta recently produced a triple jump that was among the 25 best in the country, “but I got knocked off that list a couple of days later,” she said.

I’m hoping to get back on it.“

Her triple jump of 38 feet, 7 inches broke the previous meet record by more than two feet.

“My goal is to hit 40 feet in the triple jump and this is a good start toward that,” Baggetta said.

While Baggetta has been stellar in the triple jump for a while, Butler junior Colton Timmons never tried the javelin until less than two weeks ago. He wound up winning that event at the Classic with a toss of 139 feet, 1 inch.

Timmons had been a sprinter before suffering a hamstring injury.

“I tore my hamstring and it was slightly detached,” Timmons said. “I’m hoping to get back and run the 400 before the season is over, but I’m done with the other sprints.

“I’ve played baseball and football, and know I can throw a little bit, so I decided to try the javelin. I didn’t want to sit around and do nothing. I never thought I’d win down here. My goal now is to set a personal record every time I throw.”

Butler County teams will now go their separate ways. Golden Tornado coach Mike Seybert, among others, is happy they got together Thursday.

“I’ve been coaching 38 years and this is the first time I’ve been to Freeport’s track,” he said. “I want to see our neighbors’ facilities,. see what everyone is up to. Every school, big or small, has its stars. That was evident today.”
