State official warns of SNAP scam

The state Department of Human Services is warning those with cellphones to beware of a text scam.

The scam involves receiving an unsolicited call or text asking for information about the recipient’s Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card and claiming that their card has been blocked.

Val Arkoosh, acting department secretary, reminds residents that the department will never ask for information about an EBT card, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Medicaid or other public-assistance programs via unsolicited or random calls or texts.

Those who receive the scam call or text, or any texts regarding department benefits that seem suspicious, are encouraged to call the department’s fraud tip line at 1-844-347-8477.
