North’s Foley takes diving gold

North Catholic senior Maggie Foley did not disappoint in her final WPIAL Diving Championship Meet.

She and Quaker Valley’s Ruby Olliffe traded time in the top spot over the final six dives of Friday’s Class 2A girls competition, held at North Allegheny High School.

When Foley took the board for the final time, she needed a score of 28 points to overtake Olliffe for the crown and turned in a dive that scored 42, giving her a total of 491.40 in 12 dives.

Foley will now prepare for her last state championship meet, scheduled next month at Bucknell University.

Girls Basketball

Alayna Rocco struck for 26 points — including four treys — as North Catholic (21-3) rolled past Beaver, 62-22, in a WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinal game. Butler resident Dacia Lewandowski contributed 19 points and Ava Walker added 13.

The Trojanettes — who won for the 19th time in 20 games — had a 21-3 lead by the end of the first quarter and a 31-10 edge at halftime. Chloe List led Beaver with eight points.

North Catholic will play Highlands (16-7) — a 43-27 winner over Elizabeth Forward — in the semifinals.

Quaker Valley 52, Knoch 39 — Hattie McGraw scored 20 points and drained six treys for the Knights (15-9), who could not recover after scoring only five points in the first quarter of this WPIAL Class 4A playoff game. Nina Shaw contributed 11 points.

Maria Hel Kowski paced Quaker Valley (16-7) with 24 points wile Shannon Von Kaenel netted 15.

Knoch will face Belle Vernon (15-9) — a 63-45 loser to Blackhawk — in the consolation round Monday.

Boys Basketball

Tasso Sfanos exploded for 38 points as Mars won its WPIAL 5A consolation round game over Fox Chapel, 75-69. Sfanos sank three treys and and nailed 11 of his 14 free throws.

Ryan Ceh contributed 13 points and Austin Campbell 11 for the Planets (16-9), who will now face South Fayette (15-10), a 68-55 winner over McKeesport in a consolation round game. The Mars-South Fayette contest will be played Tuesday.

Fox Chapel (14-11) placed four players in double figures. Moorefield-Brown and Wilson scored 18 points each, Kam Greil 14 points.

Union 58, Clarion 48 — Zander Laughlin scored 21 points and Payton Johnston 17 for the Golden Knights, who advanced in the District 9 1A playoffs. Skyler Roxbury contributed nine points.

Devon Lauer scored 18 points for Clarion.
