SV’s Xu takes down pair of pool records at Butler

BUTLER TWP — If it is true that you’re only as good as your most recent performance, then Haihan Xu remains elite following Wednesday night’s swim meet.

Seneca Valley’s senior obliterated two Butler High School pool records, winning the 200-yard individual medley in one minute, 53.59 seconds and the breaststroke in 57.30.

The former effort topped the old standard, set by North Allegheny’s Andrew Zhang in 2018, by 1.32 seconds while the breaststroke time was an astounding 2.49 seconds better than North Hills’ Kevin Lovasik the same year.

“Sometimes Coach Brian (Blackwell) will text me the pool records from where we’ll be swimming,” said Xu. “I was pretty confident I could break those two records tonight.”

Xu won the IM by 15½ seconds Wednesday while his breaststroke time was nearly seven seconds faster than the next-fastest effort.

The feats highlighted SV’s 122-56 win over Butler’s boys. The Raiders also took the girls meet 105-81. Both SV teams improved to 8-3.

Xu is the defending WPIAL champion in the IM and breaststroke.

“He’s been swimming really fast the last couple of weeks and hopefully, that can continue at the WPIAL meet (March 2-3),” Blackwell said. “He’s looking to go out with two more titles.”

Many practice swims will take place between now and then, but Xu has very strong momentum to carry with him.

“I have been really consistent with my times,” he said. “I’m really happy with how the season has gone, not just because I’m swimming well, but for the way the team has come together.”

SV’s boys earned victory in 10 of the 12 events.

Connor Seeley (200 freestyle, backstroke) and Gavin Blazer (50 freestyle, butterfly) joined Xu in winning two individual events.

Isaiah Clerkley won the diving event with a superb score of 305.80.

For the Raider girls, Morgan Baker won the 50 and 100 freestyles.

Chloe Petersen topped 200 in diving with a 217.45.

“We’ve got good competition going for relay spots (at WPIALs) and that is leading to improvement in the individual events for the girls,” said Blackwell.

Butler’s Abigail Vance qualified for WPIALs in the 200 and 500 freestyles with winning times of 1:59.09 and 5:24.27, respectively.

“The goal for all of these kids is to qualify for the WPIAL meet,” said Butler coach Troy Kroll. “When it happens, I’m proud of them.”

The WPIAL Class 3A diving championships will be held Saturday at North Allegheny High School. The swimming championships are scheduled March 2-3 at the University of Pittsburgh’s Trees Pool.
