WPIAL hoops brackets released

Eleven Butler County high school basketball teams qualified for the WPIAL playoffs. The brackets were released Monday afternoon.

North Catholic’s girls earned the county’s best seed as the Trojanettes are No. 2 in Class 4A and received a bye. They will host a quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. Feb. 24 against the winner of next Tuesday’s clash between Beaver and West Mifflin.

Following are the initial playoff matchups for the other 10 teams.

Girls

Class 6A: No. 9 Butler (11-11) will visit No. 8 Peters Township (12-10) for a preliminary round game at 8 p.m. Monday.

Class 5A: No. 10 Lincoln Park (18-4) will take on No. 7 Mars (15-6) at 8 p.m. Feb. 21 at Mt. Lebanon High School.

Class 4A: No. 12 Hopewell (10-12) will travel to No. 5 Knoch (14-8) for a 7 p.m. tip-off Feb. 21.

Boys

Class 6A: No. 5 Butler (14-7) will play at No. 4 Mt. Lebanon (14-7) at 7 p.m. Feb. 24.

No. 7 Seneca Valley (9-12) will visit No. 2 Upper St. Clair (14-8) at 7 p.m. Feb. 24.

Class 5A: No. 10 Bethel Park (13-8) will square off against No. 7 Mars (14-8) at 6 p.m. Friday at North Hills Middle School.

Class 4A: In a preliminary round game, No. 17 West Mifflin (9-12) will play at No. 16 Knoch (8-14) at 7 p.m. Thursday.

No. 15 Freeport (13-8) will travel to No. 2 Laurel Highlands (19-2) for a 7 p.m. game Monday.

No. 11 Montour (9-13) plays at No. 6 North Catholic (16-6) at 7 p.m. Monday.

Class 1A: No. 9 Summit Academy (10-7) will play at No. 8 Rochester (10-12) at 7 p.m. Friday.
