Paving the way
Ron McDowell of Shields Asphalt Paving instructs the truck driver to raise the bed of his truck while paving Third Street in Butler on Wednesday. Paving continues on South Washington Street, above, as well as on Third Street.
McDowell, an operator for Shields, estimated the work needs 686 tons of asphalt, about 30 24-ton truckloads, for repaving 1,600 feet. Both roads are part of the city's 2020 Paving Projects, approved May 21. Shields was awarded the contract with a bid of $323,732.12. The entirety of the project involves repaving all or portions of the following roads: Brady Street, Third Avenue, Pillow Street, Locust Street, North McKean Street, South Washington Street, East Birch Street, Third Street, West Walnut Street, American Avenue, Pittsburgh Pike, Broad Street, Kittanning Street and Ritts Park.
