Hein tallies 204 receiving yards in 47-28 win over Kiski

ADAMS TWP — Long plays, missed tackles and two players with 200 receiving yards or more stole the show Friday night at the Mars Athletic Complex.

Gabe Hein for Mars (6-2) only caught four passes, but made the most of what he had as he collected 204 receiving yards and three touchdowns as Mars defeated Kiski Area 47-28 at home in Class 4A Greater Allegheny Conference action.

“Our team plays great,” Hein said. “Eric (Kasperowicz) was throwing some great passes. We just have to finish in the second half.”

Hein, a freshman, was quarterback Kasperowicz’s favorite target by far Friday night, who ended the game with 220 passing yards and four touchdowns.

“(Hein) is a playmaker,” Mars coach Eric Kasperowicz said. “He’s got that ability and it is our job to get him the ball and put him in position to make plays.”

On the other side, Isaiah Gonzalez saw more volume than Hein with 14 catches, 200 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

“Listen, (Gonzalez) drove us crazy in the beginning of the year,” Kiski coach Sam Albert said. “He kept dropping them and we knew how good he could be. The last three games have just been unbelievable.”

Mars running back Evan Wright started the scoring off with a 52-yard run in the first quarter to get things rolling for the Planets.

Wright, who has been nursing an injury ended the game with 132 yards on six carries and two scores.

“(Wright) was banged up last week,” Kasperowicz said. “So we were careful of how much we ran him.”

The Planets took a 20-point advantage into halftime and followed up with two more Hein touchdowns to start the third.

That didn’t stop the Cavaliers offense from going down without a fight, as they scored three unanswered touchdowns late in the third quarter and early in the fourth.

“I’ve never been prouder of a group of kids,” Albert said. “We spotted them three or four touchdowns with miss tackles, but our kids played hard and high energy so I can’t ask for more than that.”

Carlos Orr, who was giving Wright a little rest in the backfield, put the game away with a 14-yard touchdown run with one minute left in the game, to secure the 19-point victory for the home team.

A heavy-hitting Armstrong team awaits Mars next week who defeated Indiana Friday night 47-14 to move to 6-1.

“We will be playing on the road which we haven’t been good at this year so far,” Kasperowicz said. “We need to go up there and battle and try to contain and limit the big plays.”
