2 charged with transporting teen to Missouri

Charges were filed against two Arkansas men for allegedly transporting a 15-year-old boy from Adams Township to Missouri, and one of the men is accused of expecting a relationship with the teen.

Adams Township police charged Nicholas P. Padgett, 30, of Springdale, Ark., and Nathaniel T. Archer, 28, of Bentonville, Ark., with felonies interference with child custody and theft for their alleged involvement in the boy’s disappearance April 22.

Archer additionally was charged with one count of felony criminal use of a communication facility.

Police said the teen was discovered missing the morning of April 22, after leaving his parents a note that he was running away. The note further stated the boy was denouncing his Catholic upbringing and proclaiming his sexuality.

The boy’s cellphone, Oculus virtual reality headset, Xbox console and 22 buckets of silver JFK half-dollar coins amounting to $150,000 also were missing from the home.

“It appears that (the boy) had been picked up by an unknown (person), and there had been significant planning into his disappearance,” the investigating officer said.

Friends of the boy told police he had been messaging adult men on Discord. Several text and audio conversations on the Oculus headset referenced a “boyfriend,” according to police.

The suspect vehicle was determined to be a 2013 black Nissan Sentra with Arkansas registration.

Documents showed the vehicle at a Sunoco gas station on Route 228 around 8 p.m. April 21. Padgett and Archer were identified as the occupants, police said. The vehicle remained in a 1-square mile radius around the boy’s address until 10:51 p.m. and was seen heading south on Interstate 79.

On April 23, township police received word from officers in St. Robert, Mo., that the boy had been located at an Econo Lodge, after being left there by Padgett and Archer.

The men had let him go, but kept the silver coins, officials said.

The boy told police he’d been messaging Archer and expressed his unhappiness living at home. He also told Archer about the silver coins in his basement, according to documents.

Archer allegedly said the boy could come and live with him, saying to bring the silver coins and important identification documents “to obtain a driver’s license or identification when he gets older.”

The men arrived at the residence, and police said Archer helped carry buckets of silver from the home to the car while wearing gloves. The boy told officers Archer wanted to take all of the buckets, but some were left inside the home.

Police said that 100 miles from the boy’s residence, Archer smashed the boy’s phone with a car jack “to prevent anyone from calling or tracking,” according to the affidavit.

On April 22, the boy had said he had a change of heart and wanted to return home. Archer became angry and stressed by this, police said.

The boy also reported that Archer “planned on being in a relationship and implied that he expected sex,” from the 15-year-old while having previous knowledge of his age.

Bentonville, Ark., police and FBI task force agents located and arrested Padgett and Archer on April 24, and they’re expected to be extradited to Butler County.
