More than $31 million in annual grant funding was approved for 2,336 fire, rescue and emergency medical organizations that applied across the state.

All but a few fire and EMS organizations in Butler County are on the list to receive funding.

Thomas Cook, acting state fire commissioner, said in a news release Friday that he was pleased to see such extreme interest in the Fire Company and Emergency Medical Service Grant Program this year.

“The state support is much needed for our responders and the communities they work tirelessly to protect,” Cook said.

Gov. Josh Shapiro said because firefighters and EMS personnel put their lives on the line every day to keep their neighbors safe, they deserve support from Harrisburg.

“That’s why my administration is making sure they have the resources they need to keep our communities safe,” Shapiro said. “As governor, I’ll be laser-focused on bringing people together and ensuring public safety.”

Eligible projects in the grants include facility upgrades, equipment purchases, debt reduction, training and certification, education and public outreach, and recruitment and retention efforts.

The news release did not specify the grant amounts to be received by the fire and EMS organizations, nor did the fire commissioner’s website. It did say not all grants were fully funded due to the popularity of the program.
