SV swimmers hope to dominate at WPIAL swim championships

The proof is in the numbers for Seneca Valley's boys swimming team.

The Raiders have turned in an incredible season, earning a 12-0 record in dual meets while winning their second straight section championship.

They aim to extend their success to this week's WPIAL Class 3A Championship meet, which begins Thursday at the University of Pittsburgh.

Nowhere is SV's dominance more apparent than in relay events. It is ranked first in the district in all three — 200 medley (1:35.65), 200 freestyle (1:25.96) and 400 freestyle (3:11.35).

"We were hoping to have each relay seeded in the top three," said SV coach Brian Blackwell. "Having all of them ranked first is a little surprising."

While Blackwell has not settled on a lineup for the relays, he has a lot of talent to choose from.

Junior Haihan Xu is seeded first in the 200 individual medley and breaststroke. Senior Daniel Simoes, last year's district champ in the IM, is tops in the 100 freestyle while another senior, Kevin Donaldson, is second in the 100 and 200 freestyles.

The trio is complemented by a strong supporting cast, led by senior Zach Lozowski (seeded 6th in IM) and junior Gavin Blazer (8th in butterfly).

Xu is hoping to build on a strong WPIAL effort as a sophomore when he placed third in both the IM and breaststroke.

"Over the last year, I looked at improving my turns and underwaters," he said. "I also worked at becoming physically stronger.

"I don't want to psych myself out and am treating this as any other meet."

Last year, the Raiders placed second in the WPIAL team standings behind Upper St. Clair.

"We were shooting for it last year and it's definitely a possibility for us this time," said Blackwell. "Each guy has to focus on his job and if they do that, we should be ok."

Butler senior Ben Borvendeg is the defending champion in the 50 freestyle, winning the title with a time of 20.95.

He is seeded second at 21.31 behind Hempfield's Dom Falcon.

"My best time is 20.69, which I swam at states last year," said Borvendeg. "I want to at least go that fast, if not faster. Being a senior, I don't get another shot."

SV's girls are led by seniors Ria Dietz and Abby Perry, who are seeded second and fourth, respectively, in the butterfly. They will also be swimming on the Raiders' sixth-ranked 200 medley relay team.

Following are Butler County's Class 3A swimmers who have qualified for the WPIAL Championships, scheduled Thursday and Friday at the University of Pittsburgh's Trees Pool.
