American Natural in Adams Township to get new entrance

Adams Township supervisors on Monday approved the construction of a new right-in-right-out entrance to the American Natural gas station and convenience store at the intersection of Route 228 and Heritage Creek Drive.

The plan was previously approved at a recent Planning Commission meeting and was brought before the Board of Supervisors by Jerrod Crosby of Wooster and Associates.

American Natural previously contacted the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to discuss issuing permits for the project, and had also discussed the new entrance with Adams Township’s engineers.

The current entrance to the gas station wraps around the back of the lot, which Crosby said has hurt business at the store.

“American Natural, just like any other gas station convenience store, operates based on convenience. The access that is currently there is inconvenient,” he said. “To get into and out of the store, you have to come in, to the light, and go all the way to the back.

“A convenient access out front, we believe, is going to save operation. The store is somewhat suffering financially. Without a convenient access to and from 228, there’s a very good chance that it will fail.”

The township approved the project and agreed to write a letter to provide to PennDOT, contingent upon American Natural’s agreement to install an area light if the new entrance requires one for safety.

Police department changes

At the meeting, supervisors approved the resignation of one Adams Township patrol officer, Chris Thiel, and voted to terminate the employment of another officer who was not named.

Supervisors also approved hiring two new officers, contingent on the completion of their background checks.
