A Zelienople man allegedly sliced his girlfriend's thumb Friday night, which sent her to the hospital.

Zelienople Police filed charges Saturday against Kyle R. Wenzel, 26, of Zelienople, who was charged with felony aggravated assault and misdemeanors simple assault, reckless endangerment, terroristic threats and simple assault.

Wenzel was arraigned Sunday morning by District Judge Wayne Seibel, who placed him in Butler County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bond. If Wenzel were to post bail, he would also be placed on house arrest with an alcohol monitoring bracelet, and he also would not be permitted to contact the alleged victim.

Police talked with Wenzel's girlfriend Saturday about the incident, which started Friday night.

Police said the girlfriend received multiple calls from Fisher's Bar and Wenzel, requesting she pick up her boyfriend from the bar.

“Staff at Fisher's Bar told (the girlfriend) come get Kyle because he was highly intoxicated and starting fights with other patrons,” said the investigating officer in the affidavit.

After walking Wenzel home, the two went inside his apartment on North Main Street in Zelienople, police said. She told officers Wenzel grabbed a knife and after a brief interaction, the blade sliced into her thumb.

The girlfriend told officers Wenzel accused her of grabbing the blade.

“(The girlfriend) states at no time did she attempt to do so,” police said.

Police said Wenzel apologized for cutting her and called his mother, who arrived soon after with his father.

Wenzel's parents took the girlfriend to the hospital for treatment. The girlfriend told officers, Wenzel's mother encouraged her to lie about how the cut happened.

“At the hospital, Wenzel's mother offered to pay cash for the treatment,” said police, citing the girlfriend's statement. “(The girlfriend) informed the hospital that she cut her thumb slicing vegetables, but during the visit she admitted that it wasn't from that.”

Police said when hospital staff asked the girlfriend if she was safe, she replied she was. She told officers she said this because Wenzel's mother was outside waiting for her hospital visit to finish.

Police said the girlfriend received stitches on her thumb and has scheduled a follow-up appointment to look into nerve or tendon damage.

Wenzel will appear for a preliminary hearing before Seibel. The date was not immediately available Sunday.
