Woman allegedly took drugs into jail

A Butler woman faces additional drug charges after police said she tried bringing crack into jail Oct. 12, where she was being taken on drug-related arrest warrants.

Lea Marie Parrish, 43, is charged with possession of a controlled substance by an inmate, a second-degree felony, and misdemeanor possession after she allegedly brought crack-cocaine to the Butler County Prison, where Butler police were taking her on an unrelated warrant for drug charges.

In an affidavit, police allege they asked Parrish “several times” whether she had any drugs on her when they were detaining her, something she denied even after police said narcotics in jail would result in felony charges.

When police arrived at the county jail, the police affidavit said, officers noticed a powdery residue on the seat where Parrish was sitting — something not present prior to transporting her to jail.

Parrish then walked toward the processing area “at a fast pace,” according to police, briefly exiting the officers' sight. The affidavit alleges the officer heard a “rustling noise” where Parrish was standing and that she “appeared visibly nervous.”

At that point, the affidavit said, a corrections officer told the officer to check underneath the carpet. Underneath the carpet was a clear plastic bag containing suspected crack cocaine, according to the affidavit.

“When confronted about the narcotics, Parrish stated that the bag had been transported inside her (body cavity),” the affidavit alleged.

Parrish remains in Butler County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bail on both the new and warrant charges.
