Mars Borough Council discussed an upcoming stream cleaning project at Monday's meeting.

Gregg Hartung, mayor of Mars, said he met with representatives from KLH Engineers Inc. and Chatham University to plan to clean Breakneck Watershed sometime in the late spring or early summer.

The project would involve volunteers and interns from Chatham, who could be taking their first steps into real-world engineering through the project.

“They thought it was a great opportunity for their students to get hands-on experience,” he said. “KLH will be there to provide oversight and guidance.”

Also at the meeting, Brian Fleeson, one of the organizers of Mars' Applefest, told the council the annual event would be back this October. Coronavirus caused the organizers to cancel the event last year, but Fleeson said the group is already recruiting vendors and sellers for the Applefest, scheduled Oct. 2 at Grand Avenue and Pittsburgh Street.Council president Mike Fleming then made a motion for council to acknowledge the planning of Applefest, in order to be prepared to help in the municipal duties, such as shutting down the roads and getting insurance for the event.
