High school musical awards go virtual

Knoch, Mars, Slippery Rock and Freeport high schools will participate in a virtual celebration planned for this year’s Henry Mancini Awards.

The event May 22 will be a celebration of high school musical theatre in Butler, Beaver, Lawrence and Mercer counties.

The event will be livestreamed free at 7 p.m., though the exact details for that are not yet available.

The competition component will only include awards for Best Actor and Best Actress.

Those two awardees will go on to the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (The Jimmy Awards), which will be held virtually and broadcast nationwide in the summer.

Butler County students who have won Best Actress or Best Actor in recent years include Addison Albert and Brecken Farrell from Knoch, Halle Surgil from Freeport, and Mia Manuppelli from Mars.

Founded in 1994, the Henry Mancini Awards have been a program of Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center in Beaver County since 2014.
