Adams Twp. looks at unsafe sign placement

Drivers find they are a traffic concern

ADAMS TWP — Supervisors addressed concerns Monday night about dangerously staked real estate signs, some of which officials said are illegal under township code.

The issue was brought to the table by supervisor vice chairman Ronald Shemela.

“I got a call last weekend from a resident,” Shemela said.

Shemela said the resident got in touch after not being able to see around a real estate sign when pulling out of a township intersection.

“I went and looked at it myself,” Shemela said. “It was a dangerous situation.”

Shemela said he removed the sign the resident pointed out to him.

Moving forward, Shemela said township police and zoning enforcement need to watch for possible problems.

Gary Peaco, township manager, said many such signs actually violate the township's sign ordinance when they're placed off-premises.

“Technically, it's illegal to have them up,” Peaco said.

The township has been flexible about enforcing this, according to Peaco.

“That (ordinance) is somewhat restrictive,” Peaco said. “Because you see (these signs) everywhere.”

Russell Ford, supervisors chairman, asked if the township needed “to tighten that ordinance up.”

Peaco explained township officials are in the process of reviewing several ordinances with solicitor Sean Gallagher, including the one for signs.

Tim Stack, a resident, said he brought his concerns about real estate sign placement to the township a few years ago.

At that time, Stack said he was told where the signs were placed was legal.

“I'm surprised to hear it's not legal,” Stack said.

Ford confirmed several township leaders discussed similar sign concerns in the past.

Peaco explained the township could look at clarifying the ordinance to make allowances for real estate sign placement at certain times in certain areas.

There are no formal ordinance revisions to come before the board at this time, although Peaco anticipates a draft being ready in the coming weeks.

Adams Township Chief of Police Shawn Anglum, who was present during Monday's meeting, said police have received complaints about political signs, but not real estate.
