Mars Area School Board reorganizes for new year

A virtual meeting Tuesday night began with a reorganizational meeting for the election of officers for the Mars Area School Board.

John Kennedy kept his seat as board president and Gordon Marburger kept his position as treasurer, with both receiving unanimous affirmation votes.

Kevin Hagen replaced Rita Dorsch as board vice president.

The board also approved a 2021 board meeting calendar during the reorganization meeting.

The school board also moved to change all flexible instruction days (FIDs) to remote learning days in the 2020-21 district calendar.“It's more of semantics than anything,” said Mark Gross, district superintendent.FIDs have recently been utilized by some Pennsylvania districts to allow students to learn remotely when school is canceled due to inclement weather or an emergency. In accordance with the health and safety plan developed this year in response to the coronavirus pandemic, the district has conducted livestream interactive learning for students who wish to attend school in a remote capacity. The district has now been approved by the state to replace FIDs with remote learning days.Gross said while there won't be any physical changes to how the days are conducted, the labeling change will allow the district to provide the most current information to families.
