Mars makes soccer history

Members of the Mars girls and boys soccer teams celebrate their state championship victories Saturday night at Hersheypark Stadium. Mars became the first WPIAL school to ever win boys and girls state soccer titles in the same season.
1st WPIAL program to win boys, girls state titles in 1 year

HERSHEY — Shortly after the Mars boys soccer team received the state championship trophy following a 2-1 win over Northern York at Hersheypark Stadium Friday night, the girls team joined it on the field for a rare photo opportunity.

Earlier in the evening, the girls had capped 2020 with a 2-0 victory against Villa Joseph Marie.

The twin crowns made Mars the first WPIAL school to claim both a boys and girls state soccer title in the same season.

Girls players proudly displayed their hardware while the boys did the same.

“This is awesome for our school,” said senior forward Dane Beller, who scored a pair of goals in the second half for the boys. “The seniors on both teams, we've been together for a long time. What a great night!”

Mars' girls won a state title for the second straight year and third time overall. For the Planet boys, the PIAA championship was the first ever for the program.

“We had a double-banquet last year with the boys team,” said Mars senior defender Ellie Howell. “They announced everything we had accomplished and I know they wanted what we had. Tonight they went out and got it. To win it all in the same year, both teams, it's crazy ... very impressive.”

Not only did Mars earn a pair of state titles, both squads finished the season undefeated with a combined record of 39-0.

The Planet boys outscored their foes this season 93-9; the girls by a 111-5 margin.

“There was a lot of hard work to get here and it was a great effort,” said Mars athletic director Scott Heinauer. “Both teams won a lot of games and to do what they did tonight, it's an amazing feat. I'm proud of all these kids.”
