Harmony Christmas Kickoff slated Saturday

Wooden spoon craftsman Gregg Kristophel will be one of the artisans participating in the Harmony Christmas Kickoff from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

While the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to the glühwein at the canceled Weihnachtsmarkt in Harmony, the German mulled wine will make a reappearance at the first Harmony Christmas Kickoff on Saturday.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the borough will rush in the holiday season with artisane, glühwein and an attempt to bring some sort of normalcy to Christmas 2020, even with the cancellations of other events this year due to COVID-19.

The event, cosponsored by the Harmony Museum and Harmony Business Association, will serve as a replacement to the German-style Christmas market that would normally be held around this time. In fact, a number of artisans who typically make an appearance at the Weihnachtsmarkt will be among the nearly 20 vendors in attendance at the Christmas Kickoff.

“Even though we had to cancel this year's traditional Christmas market, we are happy people can enjoy the sights and smells of the holiday season in our charming town,” museum vice president Gwen Lutz said.

The Harmony Museum will open its Glühwein Hut for those who attend the free event, and will sell the mulled wine and apple cider in commemorative mugs.

While not all elements of the holiday season will be present — snow will almost certainly be absent, given the current forecast for Saturday is a high of 52 and a low of 39 degrees — the festivities will continue.
