Electric car charging stations coming to county

Two fast-charging stations for electric vehicles will be installed in southwestern Butler County.

The stations will be placed at the American Natural locations at 940 Sheraton Drive in Cranberry Township and 201 Scharberry Lane in Adams Township, according to a news release by the county commissioners.

The charging stations will be partially funded by Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) grants from the state Department of Environmental Protection.

The FAST funds will pay for half of each charging station.

The Cranberry station received a grant of $104,000, and the Adams location received a $99,000 grant.

More than 18,200 electric passenger vehicles were registered in the state as of December 2018, which is a 50 percent increase from December 2017.

The five electric charging stations to be installed at a total of five regional American Natural locations are expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 48 metric tons annually, according to the release.

“It's really a wave of the future in transportation,” said Kim Geyer, county commissioner.
