N.Y. man charged in Cranberry theft

CRANBERRY TWP — A Rochester, N.Y., man faces felony charges related to an alleged shoplifting incident in Butler County, having been charged with similar crimes in two other Pennsylvania counties.

Darin Lamont Thompson, 30, is charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit retail theft, retail theft, conspiracy to receive stolen property and receiving stolen property, all third-degree felonies, as well as misdemeanor possessing instruments of a crime in connection with one alleged theft in Cranberry Township.

He faces similar charges in Allegheny and Erie counties.

According to police, Thompson was spotted entering the Walmart in Cranberry just before 6 a.m. April 28, 2019, grabbing a bag from the shelves and entering an employees-only area where tobacco products are kept. There, Cranberry police said, he loaded more than $900 worth of cigarettes into the bag.

In the same store, according to the criminal complaint filed in July 2019, Thompson and an accomplice grabbed plastic totes and loaded them with ink and toner, but abandoned those totes when they noticed the store manager watching them, and left the store with the cigarette-filled bag.

A police affidavit states Thompson was arrested when he returned a rental car in Rochester, although it did not list the cause for arrest. In Erie County, he faces charges of racketeering, organized retail theft and nine other felony charges, and in Allegheny County he faces two felony charges of attempted retail theft.

Prior to this recent string of arrests and charges being filed, police said, Thompson was convicted of retail theft three times.

His suspected accomplice in Cranberry is believed to have stolen more than $150,000 worth of goods from Walmarts in Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia, police said, but the affidavit does not state if Thompson is believed to have been involved in those incidents.Thompson remains in Butler County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail. Court records do not indicate if he is represented by an attorney.
