'Hang out' plan bad idea for teens

Police nab pair in man's home

Two Butler teenagers face felony charges after police said they entered a Jackson Township home they thought was abandoned to “hang out.”

Simon Douglas Brown, 18, of Butler Township, is charged with burglary, a first-degree felony, and criminal trespass, a second-degree felony, as a result of the incident. Natalie Laine Derose, 18, of Butler, faces charges of criminal conspiracy, a second-degree felony, and third-degree felony criminal trespass.

According to Jackson Township police, the two visited the house on Textor School Road a few days before June 26, at which time Brown allegedly broke a sliding-glass door with a baseball bat. The two, according to police, said they believed the property was abandoned, but police noted there was no reason for them to think so.

“It should be noted that the property showed no indication it was abandoned and multiple clearly visible posted signs of 'Property Monitored by Security Camera' were present on scene,” according to an affidavit written by Officer Lucas Sickafuse.

Brown and Derose returned to the house June 26, whereupon Brown took a stereo speaker from the house and placed it in his vehicle, police said. The homeowner returned to the house that day and saw a car sitting in his driveway and heard noises inside the house, according police.

When police arrived, they apprehended the two and discovered the homeowner's stereo speaker in Brown's car, returning it to the homeowner, the affidavit states. According to police, the two admitted they found the property, under the belief it was abandoned, to be a good place to “hang out.”

Brown and Derose remain in Butler County Prison, both on $3,000 bond.
