COVID-19 relief block grant on way

County applies for nearly $17M

Local entities could get some help with the financial black eyes caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The commissioners at their Wednesday meeting approved a resolution to apply for a state Department of Community and Economic Development grant for almost $17 million in a COVID-19 County Relief Block Grant.

The funds are targeted to assist seven specific categories affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Ann Brown of the county Human Services Department said the application was sent in last week and the funds have been approved by the DCED.

She said the funds should arrive in July.

Leslie Osche, commissioners chairwoman, said the application was the result of the county's collaboration with municipalities, the Chamber of Commerce and other entities.

It is not clear whether the funds will arrive in a lump sum or the county will draw down on their allotment each time funds are disbursed.

The seven categories to receive funding are:

4 Offsetting certain direct county costs related to COVID-19

4 Assisting qualifying municipalities to offset response and planning efforts related to COVID-19

4 Grants for businesses with fewer than 100 employees and businesses and entities engaged in tourism

4 Support for certain entities that provided assistance to businesses during the pandemic

4 Behavioral health and substance abuse disorder treatment services

4 Internet deployment with priority given to unserved or underserved areas

4 Qualifying nonprofits

Osche said guidance on applying for the funds will be released in the near future. She said the funds will be disbursed beginning in August.
