HARRISBURG — Hunters of all ages may participate in Saturday's opening of the statewide spring gobbler season, which runs through May 31.

Pennsylvania hunters for nearly 20 years have consistently harvested more than 30,000 turkeys in the spring season, which is open to hunting only bearded birds — typically males.

Hunting hours begin 30 minutes before sunrise and end at noon from May 3-17. Hunting hours extend to 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset May 19-31.

ELLWOOD CITY — Butler Cubs boxer Billy Wolfe improved his amateur record to 27-5 with a unanimous decision over Lucas Dupree of Pittsburgh in the AMA Junior Olympic semifinals Saturday night.The fight was in the 114-pound intermediate division.Cubs boxer Sam Whalen (4-1) will take on Chris Monroe of Boyce in an AMA Golden Gloves cadet bout this Saturday at The Royal in the South Hills.

PITTSBURGH — Mars track and field standout Lydia Dennis, Freeport softball player Alexis Roenigk and Seneca Valley girls lacrosse coach Katie Smolter will be among the honorees at the third annual Western Pennsylvania Positive High School Athlete Awards program at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Heinz History Center.Student athletes representing 26 different boys and girls sports, along with two coaches — Smolter being one — will be honored by current and former pro athletes such as Hines Ward and Roberto Clemente Jr.The honorees, who will be awarded scholarship money, were selected from nearly 1,000 nominations submitted from 125 Western Pa. schools.Each nominated Positive Athlete was required to show an optimistic attitude, teammate encouragement, servant leadership, heart for others, ability to admit imperfections, giving 100 percent all the time and realizing the team as more important than the individual.

LAS VEGAS — Throw Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s wallet into the ring as a prospective owner of the Los Angeles Clippers.Mayweather said he's interested in putting together a group — with himself as a majority owner — to buy the Clippers if the team is put up for sale.“Do we want to buy the Clippers? Yes we do,” Mayweather said. “I'm very, very interested in buying the Clippers.”

SUNRISE, Fla. — The Florida Panthers have parted ways with interim coach Peter Horachek.Panthers general manager Dale Tallon made the announcement, saying the dismissal was effective immediately. Horachek replaced Kevin Dineen as Panthers' coach on Nov. 8, and Florida went 26-36-4 under him.
