Service group serves up lunch to ER staffers

The Evans City Rotary Club donated meals for all 60 emergency department workers at Butler Memorial Hospital on Monday.

The Evans City Rotary Club donated meals for all 60 workers at the Butler Memorial Hospital emergency department Monday.

The food — subs, chips, salads and cookies — was from a local chain restaurant.

“That’s a very small thank you for the hell they’re going through,” said Lee Dryer, assistant regional Rotary Foundation coordinator.

According to Butler Health System, the Butler hospital is treating 11 patients with suspected or confirmed cases of the coronavirus. Four of those patients are being treated in the intensive care unit.

“They’re the frontline defenders for us against this kind of stuff,” Dyer said. “Their commitment is simply what they do, every day, day after day.”

Dyer said he got the idea to deliver food after seeing an interview with an emergency room doctor in which the doctor said many medical personnel don’t have time to eat lunch during the fight against COVID-19.
