WEXFORD — The North Catholic girls basketball team won its 15th consecutive game Thursday night as the Trojanettes defeated Quaker Valley 47-31 in a WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinal matchup at North Allegheny High School.

Tess Myers had the hot hand for North Catholic, scoring 24 points.

Corinne Washington was nearly the entire Quaker offense, scoring 24 points.

Bailey Garbee scored the other seven points for Quaker Valley.

“Washington had a great game,” North Catholic coach Molly Rottmann said. “I looked up at the end of the first and she had all their points.”

North Catholic took the early edge with a 12-6 lead after the first quarter. The Quakers made it a game in the second quarter, outscoring North Catholic 15-11.

“What stuck out was whatever our thoughts were going into the game we knew who we are and how we play,” Quaker Valley coach Tom Demko said. “We knew we could be right with this team, but it would have to be four quarters.”

What worked for Quaker Valley was getting more players involved other than Washington.

Garbee scored all seven of her points in the second quarter to help bring the Quakers within reach at the half down 23-21.

In order to slow down Washington, Rottmann knew she was going to need to change her team’s defense heading into the second half.

“We were just struggling to stop (Washington),” Rottman said. “We weren’t getting the help where we needed it so we switched to a 2-3 zone, which was the right call.”

The defensive adjustment didn’t really slow Washington, who added 10 points in the third.

Myers scored 11 of North Catholic’s 15 points in the third quarter to counter Washington.

It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that North Catholic finally tamed Washington.

They didn’t just tame Washington. The Trojanettes shut out Quaker Valley in the fourth to secure a 16-point victory.

“You know what, we didn’t get fouled,” Demko said. “Just a program like North Catholic is strong. It was just a rough fourth quarter for us, couldn’t get the ball to go in.”

Butler native Kylee Lewandowski posted 13 points for the Trojanettes on the evening.

North Catholic moves on to play Blackhawk on Monday after the Cougars defeated Indiana 58-44 Thursday night.

“I think Blackhawk was favored to win and that will be a great match-up,” Rottmann said. “They’re going to press the heck out of us. It’s going to be a completely different pace and completely different game than tonight.”
