Schools announce plans to make up for snow day

S. Butler, Seneca to attend Friday

School districts across the county are accounting for a needed snow day on Friday.

Some districts, like Seneca Valley and South Butler, are making the day up Friday.

Karns City and Moniteau school districts are making the day up Monday, which is Presidents Day. Both districts originally had an Act 80 day scheduled.

Other districts like A-C Valley, Butler, Freeport and Mars will make the day up on a variety of dates in the spring.

Mars Area School District made an announcement that further snow days will force them to use flex days.

“I am excited to implement our plan, but do not look forward to the wintry conditions that would force us to implement the day,” said Mars Superintendent Wesley Shipley

Gov. Tom Wolf signed a bill in July giving schools the power to use “flexible education days” in the event of school closures due to inclement weather.

These flex days would allow students to complete lessons at home via the internet. Students who don't have internet access would receive paper packets to complete.

Students have five days to finish the assignments.

“This allows us to continue instruction seamlessly and keeps the content consistent,” Shipley said.

Mars has five flex days to use before the end of the year. Snow days beyond those five days will extend their last day of school.

A list of the snow makeup days is as follows:

A-C Valley — March 13

Butler — April 9

Freeport — April 15

Karns City — Feb. 17

Mars — June 11

Moniteau — Feb. 17

Seneca Valley — Feb. 14

South Butler — Feb. 14
