Seneca Valley topples North Allegheny for section wrestling title again

WEXFORD — Alejandro Herrera-Rondon's pin gave Seneca Valley the lead, but there was still work to do if the Raiders wanted to take home a third straight Section 3-AAA wrestling title.

Following Herrera-Rondon's fall at 132 pounds, the Raiders held a 30-24 edge over North Allegheny with three bouts remaining.

Juniors Chanz Shearer and Antonio Amelio then scored decisions at 138 and 145, respectively, clinching a 40-24 victory at North Allegheny High School.

It is the second straight year that the Raiders topped the Tigers for the section crown.

“This feels good,” said SV coach Kevin Wildrick, who served as an assistant at NA for seven seasons before taking over the Raiders in 2011. “To have it come in this gym makes it a bit more special.”

The Raiders had dismantled Hampton in the semifinals, 50-18. North Allegheny defeated Butler 57-15 to reach the final.

In the third-place match, Butler rallied for a 42-30 win over Hampton.

Shearer gained early control over Max Stedeford and led 4-1 entering the second period. He was up 6-1 early in the third before hanging on for a 6-4 victory.

“I saw some opportunities early on and was able to get a couple takedowns,” Shearer said. “I've known Max since we were kids and our matches are always close.”

Amelio's win at 145 had little drama. He scored an early takedown and won 5-0 over NA's Freddy Junko.

SV got an early pin from Liam Volk-Klos at 170, but the Tigers led 15-6 after four bouts. SV's Nick Funovits then turned Luke Rumpler and earned a crucial fall in the second period at 220.

“That turned momentum back our way,” said Wildrick.

It was Tyler Chappell's 2-1 decision over Nick Gorman at 106 pounds that got the Raiders really rolling. It marked the start of six wins in seven bouts to close the match.

“Tyler's a freshman and is still trying to get to 106 pounds. He's at 104 right now,” said Wildrick. “He wrestled a very tough opponent tonight.”

Hunter Swedish added a fall at 113.

The Raiders placed third in the WPIAL in 2018 and were runner-up last year.

“I like the grit of this team,” Wildrick said. “We have guys who can turn things when they're not going our way. Top to bottom, I think we're a bit stronger.”

Against NA, Cooper Baxter and Hunter Neff earned pins for Butler at 170 and 182 pounds, respectively. Colton Spohn, Cade Savochka and Nate McMaster tallied pins in successive weight classes beginning at 132 against Hampton. The Talbots led 30-18 before dropping the final four bouts.

Butler coach Scott Stoner wants his team to revert to the mentality it took to the mat earlier in the season.

“A couple of weeks ago, we beat a good Bellefonte team. We were aggressive,” he said. “I didn't see it happen here tonight. We weren't the more aggressive team in either match.

“We just expected things to happen here instead of making them happen. You can't do that against good teams.”

The WPIAL Tournament begins next week.
