Wife calls police, says husband attacked her

He awaits sentencing in hatchet case

A woman from Gibsonia called police after midnight Dec. 19, and begged them to “hurry up and come before my husband kills me.”

While police were en route, the woman could be heard over the open 911 line pleading with her husband to put a knife down, according to court documents.

At the time her husband, Ronald Postreich, 72, was awaiting sentencing for an attack on his Penn Township neighbor with a hatchet while wearing a mask.

Postreich's sentencing had been delayed over questions regarding his mental and physical health after he pleaded no contest in March to two counts of felony aggravated assault, and a misdemeanor charge of defiant trespass in the incident with his neighbor.

As part of the plea deal, Postreich had to move out of his house on Morgan Road, bringing him to Gibsonia during his pretrial release.

He now faces charges related to the Dec. 19 Allegheny County encounter, including a number of felonies for allegedly assaulting police officers.

The new charges triggered a violation under his pretrial supervision in Butler County. A hearing is scheduled next month to address the violation.

As Northern Regional Police police officers approached Postreich at his Gibsonia home following the Dec. 19 call, he allegedly yelled at the officers and told them to get off his property, according to a police report. In his affidavit to the court, one responding officer also reported Postreich threw items at him and his partner, flinging a large wrench, paint can, spray paint, and a mag flashlight.Officers said they ordered Postreich to get on the ground while he was throwing items at them. When he wouldn't listen, according to police, one of the officers fired his Taser at Postreich. The “connection was ineffective” and Postreich slunk to the back of the garage, grabbing several large knives, according to police. The second officer also used her Taser on Postreich, causing him to collapse while holding the knives. The officers then were able to disarm and handcuff Postreich.Court documents report that he allegedly screamed at his wife and police.“If I ever see you on the street, I'll blow your head off,” Postreich said, according to police reports. “If you're here when I come home, you're dead.”Police said he continued to yell for several minutes and told police he wished they had shot and killed him.Officers later spoke with Postreich's wife, who suffered no visible injuries and refused medical attention. She told police her husband recently changed psychiatric medication, which led to his going into a “psychiatric episode.” She also told police a similar situation happened before from a change in medication.Officers noted in their report that the house was in “complete disarray,” with pictures knocked down and trash strewn about.Postreich's wife told police he hit her over the head with a picture frame, adding that she wasn't injured.Police were able to get a voluntary written statement from Postreich's wife, but considered it to be “mostly illegible.”Postreich was transported to UPMC Presbyterian for injuries. Because of his comments and threats, police were granted an involuntary commitment at UPMC Western Psychiatric.Police noted the paint can thrown at them had exploded, covering them and part of the ambulance in a coat of yellow paint.

In March, Postreich pleaded no contest in Butler County court to two charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and defiant trespass in the incident with his neighbor. He was scheduled to be sentenced this past June by Common Pleas Judge William Shaffer, but it was delayed after Shaffer ordered Postreich to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. He was on pretrial supervision, including an order barring him from contacting the victim, Russell Callenberg.During a preliminary hearing, Callenberg recounted the October 2017 attack. He told the court he was mowing grass on a tractor when suddenly he was knocked to the ground. He testified his glasses came off, but when he looked up he was able to see a man in a Halloween-style mask holding a rusty hatchet in one hand and a stun gun in the other.“You think you're going to die,” Callenberg testified, noting the attack left him with bruising and soreness to the back of his head and neck as well as chest pain. He was treated for injuries at Butler Memorial Hospital, and later sought additional treatment at VA Butler Healthcare, where he was told that he had suffered a collapsed lung and fractured rib in the assault.

Postreich was released to the Allegheny County jail as of Monday, where he remains in lieu of a $50,000 bond.He faces four felony charges of assaulting an officer, two misdemeanor charges of terroristic threats and simple assault, and two summary charges of harassment and criminal mischief. Postreich did not have a listed attorney for the case and his lawyer for the Butler county case, Jerry Russo, didn't immediately return a request for comment.Several sentencing dates for Postreich were rescheduled at the end of 2019. His next scheduled sentencing was set for February. It was unclear whether the hearing to address the violation to his pretrial supervision will replace the sentencing hearing, as the sentencing hearing is scheduled for Feb. 6 and the hearing addressing the pretrial supervision violation is set for Feb. 14.
