Medical center closes, lays off all employees

Ellwood City Medical Center in Lawrence County laid off all 171 employees and closed all services, the state’s Health Department announced Tuesday evening.

The layoffs come after the Health Department recently ordered a temporary closure of the hospital’s emergency department and inpatient services, citing alleged unspecified health and safety violations.

Under the Health Department’s closure, the hospital was permitted to continue seeing patients on an outpatient basis, but now the hospital will be fully closed, according to the announcement. Additionally, the hospital’s CEO, Beverly Annarumo, told the Health Department that she intends to resign early next year.

According to a Health Department spokesman, the hospital gave a number of reasons for the closure. One of the main issues was a lack of funding to continue to staff the facility.

Employees who were laid off can reach out to the Department of Labor and Industry to file for unemployment.

State Rep. Aaron Bernstine, R-10th, will host a health professionals job fair Friday at 2 p.m. in the Ellwood City Municipal Building Auditorium, 525 Lawrence Ave.
