Apples galore at the core of street fair during the 35th annual Mars Applefest
MARS - Apple was the theme and treat of the day at the 35th annual Applefest on Saturday in downtown Mars.
People flocked to the festival for their dose of the sweet fruit as apple cider, apple butter, caramel apples and apple pie pierogi.
At its core, Applefest is a street fair that sets up every year on Grand Avenue the first Saturday of October.
But the seeds for the festival were first planted 35 years ago when Mars was once known for an apple orchard.
The orchard disappeared with development, but the tradition of celebrating the harvest with art, music, activities and food still remains.
