Cranberry police warn of utility scams

CRANBERRY TWP — Police are warning residents of two types of scams involving people who pretend to be from Penn Power.

The first type involves phone calls from a “spoofed” number that is the real Penn Power customer service line. Police say the phone call includes an offer to reduce residents' electric bills by 40 percent.

A second type of scam includes individuals showing up at residents' homes and claiming to be from Penn Power to sell surge protection, but police said the company does not have door-to-door salesmen.

Township police said the utility's employees wear a photo ID and drive a marked company car when they show up at someone's house.
