Cranberry church group feeds, clothes city's needy

A volunteer from Victory Family Church's Fishers of Men group offers treats Sunday to Amber and Ryder Michael as their father, Rocky, looks on.

Members of a Victory Family Church group were Fishers of Men on Sunday, and women and children too.

The Cranberry Township church's Fishers of Men group descended on Rotary Park in the city's Island neighborhood with hot ziti, dessert and drinks plus clothing of all sizes, toys, books, boots and nonperishable foods.

The residents of the Shore Street Apartments, the low-income housing development near the park, were invited by the group members to come and get a meal to take home and shop for any necessities their household members needed.

Drew Ohorodnyk, who cofounded Fishers of Men, said the pastor was keen on having the group serve God's children, so the initial effort was held in Beaver Falls.

In addition to the Butler event on Sunday, Fishers of Men will expand to New Kensington and New Castle as well.

A children's ministry with bounce houses and other fun features for disadvantaged youth is being planned for the summertime, Ohorodnyk said.

“I just felt this on my heart for a long time,” Ohorodnyk said of the Rotary Park event. “This group I'm with is like a band of brothers and sisters.

He pointed to the face of Amber Michael, 3, who had the remnants of a chocolate cupcake on her chin.

“How could you not love seeing that?” he said.

Amber's father, Rocky Michael, carried a large bag with clothing for Amber and her brother, Ryder, 4, as well as slippers and toys.

Michael also carried pasta home for his family.

“It's surprising,” he said of the event. “Not a lot of people would do that.”

About 12 members of the group came to help at the Rotary Park event.
