A 42-year-old Cranberry man was one of 12 people charged in a federal grand jury indictment Wednesday, federal prosecutors report.

Shawn Hendrix and the 11 others face eight charges related to federal narcotics and gun laws, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Attorney Scott Brady.

Prosecutors say that between September 2016 and July 2017, the group “conspired to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl, and a quantity of heroin.”

Hendrix is one of seven within the group facing additional charges of possession with the intent to distribute either fentanyl or carfentanil. One named person, Jeremy Fooks, 32, of Pittsburgh, also was charged with possession of ammunition by a felon.

If found guilty, the drug charges require a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison or a $10 million fine or both. The gun charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison or a maximum fine of $250,000 or both.

The FBI’s Greater Pittsburgh Safe Streets Task Force investigated the drug trafficking operation, according to the release. It’s being described as a “large-scale drug trafficking organization” with operations in Butler, Beaver and Allegheny counties. Prosecution will be handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Schupansky.
